How to Travel the Alps Sustainably

Austria's alpine landscapes are among the most beautiful in the world. But increasing tourism puts pressure on fragile ecosystems. Here's how you can explore the Alps responsibly while still having an extraordinary experience.

Choose Public Transport

Austria's rail network is exceptional. The ÖBB Nightjet from major European cities brings you directly to the Alps without a single flight. Once in Austria, regional trains and PostBus services connect even the smallest mountain villages. A Klimaticket — Austria's annual public transport pass — costs €1,095 and covers the entire country.

Stay in Eco-Certified Accommodations

Look for the Austrian Ecolabel (Österreichisches Umweltzeichen) when booking hotels and guesthouses. These properties meet strict criteria for energy efficiency, waste reduction, and use of local produce. Many of our partner lodges in Tyrol and Vorarlberg hold this certification, with rates starting from €89 per night.

Respect Wildlife and Trail Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect alpine flora, which can take decades to regenerate after damage. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife — especially during spring lambing season and autumn rutting season. Never feed wild animals, and carry all waste back to the valley.

Support Local Economies

Choose locally owned restaurants over chain establishments. Buy souvenirs from regional artisans rather than mass-produced gift shops. Hire local guides who reinvest their income in the community. These choices make a meaningful difference to small alpine communities.

Carbon Offsetting

For any unavoidable flights, we recommend offsetting through Austria-based projects like the Klimafonds, which invests in Austrian reforestation and renewable energy initiatives. At thehideandseek, we automatically offset the carbon footprint of every tour we operate — it's included in the price.

Our Sustainability Pledge

Since 2022, all thehideandseek tours have been carbon-neutral. We've planted over 2,500 trees in partnership with Austrian forestry initiatives, and we donate €5 from every booking to local conservation projects.

"Sustainability isn't an add-on — it's the foundation of how we operate. The Alps will only remain magnificent if we treat them with respect." — Anna Koller, Founder
